Study Guides

Welcome to the Scarboro Missions Study Guide webpage. These FREE resources are geared to educators in Catholic schools. However, they can be adapted for adult educators and to the needs of other Christian users. The guides may be used for study, discussion, reflection and meditation.

Each guide accompanies an edition of Scarboro Missions magazine. This magazine presents the stories of lay and priest missioners and other global adventurers who go to different lands and cultures to walk with the poor and those who struggle for a better life. The magazine and study guides try to help develop an understanding of Christian mission today, which encompasses areas such as human development, the liberation of peoples, ecological and social justice, peace and interfaith dialogue.

These guides were prepared by Tony Muhitch, Religious Education teacher at St. Elizabeth High School in Thornhill, Ontario, Canada; and Sharon Willan, program assistant for Scarboro's Lay Mission Office. Sharon is a former curriculum writer in the York Catholic District School Board, Toronto, Canada.

Mr. Muhitch has been using Scarboro Missions magazine in the classroom for several years. He writes:

"Scarboro Missions magazine is a ready-made resource for Religion courses because they contain a variety of compact but impactful articles. As well, there are vivid graphics and excellent colour pictures to enhance the stories..."

"This magazine provides models for students to imitate. Very often, high school students will mention Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II as outstanding Christians. Scarboro Missions magazine provides many more examples of service."

"Scarboro Missions could become a source of opportunity to complete volunteer time towards the 40 hours required of every high school graduate in Ontario. This magazine could be of great advantage to teachers in the Justice Units of the Grades 9 and 10 courses. As well Scarboro Missions' incredible interfaith editions are a great resource for the Grade 12 World Religions course..."
