Luna String Quartet performed to support Mission work on Jan. 27, 2013

An enjoyable afternoon of classical and Brazilian music at SFM was provided by the four young women living in the Toronto area (two Brazilians, one Quebecoise, one Torontonian). The concert was supporting mission work in northern Brazil – especially in the Roraima area where Scarboro Fr. Ron MacDonell has been active for the last 20 years - as well as helping to keep alive the disappearing indigenous languages. You can see/listen to two pieces in these two videos - Video-1 (105 sec) and Video-2 (70 sec). Learn more about mission work there in Catholic Register's Jan. 19 article. A good overview of SFM's work is covered in the Sept-Oct 2010 issue of Scarboro Magazine.

New Year Greetings from SFM Moderator (Superior General)

As we begin the new year, 2013, we take this opportunity to wish God’s blessing on your undertakings. But we would also like to share an issue currently challenging us as a missionary society. No doubt you are familiar with the current trend in Europe and North America vis-à-vis vocations. But with faith in God’s presence and promise to be with us, we respectfully trust that, God willing, we will be blessed with missionaries, both priest and lay. Future missionaries will be fewer in number but just as dedicated.

It is to this end that we continue to work on nurturing vocations via the various media at our disposal – internet, e-mail, YouTube, etc. We also rely on family and friends to keep up interest and support for those considering serving abroad in a missionary role. A vocation is much more of a collective issue than we had previously thought.

Please keep missions and vocations in your good prayers. Be assured of a remembrance in our daily Mass and prayers.
Yours,
Brian Swords
Moderator

Luis Lopez's First Oath of Commitment made on December 15, 2012

Scarboro seminarian Luis Lopez made his First Oath of commitment to the Society. He was joined by his mother, sister and other family members and relatives from Ottawa and Toronto at the 10:30 am community Eucharist held in the small chapel. Luis is presently in his third year of theology, doing his studies at Regis College in Toronto. We were also happy to have with us Shawn Daley, who is serving in Diaconate ministry in the Toronto Archdiocese, in preparation for future ordination with Scarboro.

Fr. Brian Swords, Moderator (Superior General) of Scarboro Missions was the main celebrant and also received Luis’ oath of commitment. Fr Roger Brennan, a member of the Formation team was homilist. Following the Eucharistic celebration, everyone enjoyed lunch and a social gathering in the Schultz room. Few pictures from this day can be seen below but many more are posted in the Photo Gallery (Left menu). Also a very recent article of Luis can be seen in the Sept-Oct. 2012 issue of Scarboro Magaine

Fr. Mike Traher's Sabbatical Experience in Guyana in Nov-Dec 2102

Early in November, Fr. Mike Traher while on sabbatical (after 10+ years as SFM Vicar General) visited our two Scarboro missionaries and associate missioner Sr Mary Gauthier, OLM in Guyana, South America. His travels took him from Georgetown, the capital to the Amerindian community in the area of Hosororo, north west Guyana. He also visited with the Jesuits who are serving Amerindian communities in the Rupinuni area of southern Guyana. Seeing the work of our lay missioners Kate O’Donnell, and Beverley Trach and that of Sr Mary Gauthier was both inspiring and helpful to understand something of the life and the day-to-day struggles of the Guyanese people. Fr. Mike spent five weeks in Guyana came home refreshed by his experience.
